Dreams are important. Not the dreams you have when sleeping, but rather the dreams and goals you have for your future — the dreams that keep you going — the dreams that make each day worth living. Like the dream to learn to fly.
Dreams Aren’t EnoughAs important as dreams are, they aren’t enough. Why? Dreams don’t take you where you want to go. A dream needs wings — to become a tangible vision — a passion that will take you where you REALLY want to be. John Montgomery (not his real name) lives in Arkansas — his passion is flying — his dream is to become a professional pilot. He spends every available minute watching airplanes and researching everything about aerodynamics on the Internet. At 18 years of age he took a Discovery flight – his first airplane flight. John’s dream had become his passion — a tangible vision.
What It Takes To Keep Your Vision AliveJohn knew what he wanted but was unsure how he could ever have the money to make his dream reality. His family was not wealthy, and could not contribute much to help him, so he started looking for ways to fund his flight training. When his uncle found out John was looking for a good paying job, he brought him down to the construction company where he worked as a foreman. The owner gave John a chance, and he worked shoveling concrete for the next few years, until he had saved enough to fund his flight training at a well known aviation academy in Florida.
The Dream Takes WingJohn became a full time student at the flight school and focused on earning his Private Pilot License, Instrument Rating, Commercial Single Engine License and his Commercial Multi Engine License. In addition, he became a Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI) and Certificated Instrument Flight Instructor (CFII), and a Multi Engine Flight Instructor (MEI). He knew he needed to keep working towards his dream to be a professional pilot, and he needed the flight hours to make that a reality.
Five Ways To Put Wings On Your Dreams
John’s story illustrates how to put wings on your dreams:
1) Your dream must become your passion — a tangible vision.
2) Everything you do needs to fuel your vision.
3) When your dream is in peril, face the adversity squarely and choose to overcome it with whatever it takes — face your fears and do it anyway!
4) Make any necessary adjustments and keep your eyes on your goal.
5) Accept help when it comes — with grace and gratitude — let it fuel your vision.
From Dream to Vision to RealityJohn’s vision overcomes his financial worries. His story teaches how to create dreams with wings that push you toward your goals. Follow his example and your dreams will become reality, too.
